The Shoah (1939–1945)
Camp of the Kreider
1941-1943·Le Kreider
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
Installed near a salt lake of southern Oran, the camp grouped foreign Jewish workers assigned to maintain the railway and neighbouring salt works.
Located near a chott in the southern Oran region, the Kreider camp brings together foreign Jewish workers assigned to the maintenance of the railway line and the nearby salt works. The salt, the glare, and the brackish water make for a grueling stay; wounds heal poorly there. Kreider belongs to the chain of camps opened along the southern line, where men are moved from one worksite to another according to needs and disciplinary measures. The release of the internees there was neither general nor swift.
