Góra Kalwaria, on the Vistula south of Warsaw, was the seat of the most influential Hasidic court in Poland, whose influence extended over hundreds of thousands of faithful. The town's life revolved around this court and its pilgrimages. The occupation created an enclosed quarter into which the Jews of the surrounding area were driven. At the beginning of the year, the population was transferred to the enclosed quarter of Warsaw; the master of the court had already left Poland. The Jewish life of Góra Kalwaria, which bore a name known throughout Eastern Europe, came to an end there.
