Żyrardów, a mill town west of Warsaw, had a community of weavers and merchants born with the textile industry. The occupation imposed forced labor in requisitioned factories, then confined the Jews to a reduced quarter. Early in the year, this quarter was dissolved and its population transferred to the closed quarter of Warsaw, as part of the plan then emptying the localities of western Mazovia in favor of the capital. The inhabitants of Żyrardów there faced hunger, epidemics, and, the following summer, convoys to Treblinka.
