Expulsion of the Jews of Pułtusk

Pułtusk, an episcopal city in Mazovia situated on the Narew, was home to one of the oldest Jewish communities in the province, attested as early as the fifteenth century, which approached half of the population. In the first weeks of the occupation, the German army expelled the Jewish inhabitants from the city: families were gathered together, stripped of their belongings, and driven across the demarcation line into the zone held by the Soviets. Many perished along the way, from exhaustion or under blows. Those who settled further east would be overtaken by the war two years later. The city was declared empty of Jews.
