Ostrów Wielkopolski, a city in southern Greater Poland, a railway junction and commercial center, was home to an ancient Jewish community, whose great synagogue built in the nineteenth century dominated the market quarter. Annexed to the Reich, the city was one of the first that the occupier set about emptying: within weeks of the troops' arrival, Jewish families were rounded up, stripped of their possessions, and expelled to the Generalgouvernement. Those who were deposited in the Lublin region subsequently endured imprisonment and deportations.
