Expulsion of Jews from Gniezno

Gniezno, first capital of Poland and primatial see, annexed to the Reich, was home to a modest Jewish community, long established and deeply integrated into the life of the city. As early as the autumn of the first year of occupation, the German administration set about emptying the province of its Jewish inhabitants: the families of Gniezno were gathered, stripped of their possessions, and expelled by convoys to the Generalgouvernement, principally to the Lublin region. The synagogue was deconsecrated and then demolished. The city was declared free of Jews before the year was even out.
