In the month of October, Piotrków Trybunalski receives the first ghetto established in occupied Poland. The Jewish population is confined within a perimeter of old streets.
The ghetto does not yet serve the function it would later assume: its purpose is first to concentrate a population in order to control and exploit it, pending a plan for displacement to the east. It is this initial indeterminacy that explains the diversity of the ghettos — some open, others walled, some liquidated within months, others maintained for years as reserves of labor.
