Inowrocław, a town in Cuiavia known for its salt works and baths, annexed to the Reich in the very first weeks, was home to a small but ancient Jewish community, largely German-speaking and assimilated. The occupier wasted no time in applying the province's Germanization policy: the synagogue was burned, property was confiscated, and Jewish residents were expelled en masse to the Generalgouvernement during the autumn and winter, in convoys where the cold claimed victims. Those who survived these transfers were overtaken by the liquidations of the following years.
