The Essen synagogue is set on fire but resists the flames; the empty building later serves as a warehouse, then becomes a place of memory after the war.

In Essen, the large synagogue built at the turn of the century is set on fire during the night of violence, but its stone structure withstands the flames and survives. Shops are looted and the men of the community are arrested and sent to a camp. The institutions of the industrial city are dissolved and their assets seized in the weeks that follow.
