Volodymyr-Volynskyi, one of the oldest cities in Volhynia, was home to a Jewish community attested since the Middle Ages. The Polish-Soviet War brought armies through it on several occasions. The Jews of the old town were stripped of their belongings, beaten, their shops emptied by soldiers on the march. The military authorities, when they existed at all, most often simply looked the other way and moved on.
