Pogrom in Belarusian Polesie
1920·Khoïniki
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
the Jewish town in the marshes sacked, its inhabitants ransomed
Khoïniki, a Jewish shtetl in the marshes of the Belarusian Polesia, stood apart from the main roads. The armed bands that scoured the region nevertheless reached it and ransacked it. The inhabitants were held to ransom, their homes stripped of their provisions as winter approached. The shtetl's isolation, which had shielded it from armies, left it defenseless against local detachments.
