the Jewish houses of the town forced and emptied, its inhabitants beaten

Verkhnodniprovsk, a town on the Dnieper in the Ekaterinoslav governorate, was home to a Jewish community of river traders. During the civil war, Jewish homes there were broken into and emptied, their inhabitants beaten by detachments moving up and down the valley. The town had no protection against the armed bands that controlled the riverbanks.
