the community annihilated

The community of Trostianets was annihilated by the bands of the civil war.

The word "annihilated" recurs in reports concerning small market towns: it does not mean that all the inhabitants were killed, but that after the band's passage there was no longer a community — no synagogue, no communal leaders, no means of subsistence, and survivors scattered across neighboring towns. This is how, in two years, a part of the Jewish fabric of rural Ukraine disappeared.
