the Jews of the city stripped, beaten, several killed

Novhorod-Siverskyi, an ancient princely city on the Desna, was home to a more recent Jewish community, born of the opening of the left-bank towns. The Civil War brought to it the detachments that contested northern Ukraine. The city's Jews were stripped of their belongings, beaten in the streets, and several were killed. The city changed hands many times, and each change was paid for by the same inhabitants.
