the Jewish quarters of the river city looted as the troops passed

Nikopol, a town on the lower Dnieper downstream from the rapids, lived by the river and the grain trade. Its Jewish community was large. During the civil war, the town was taken and retaken by the armies and bands contending for the lower valley, and its Jewish quarters were looted with each passage. The inhabitants, stripped of their goods and supplies, were reduced to destitution.
