Klevan, a small town in Volhynia on the road from Rivne to Loutsk, was one of those places armies passed through without ever lingering long. With each passage, the Jews of the town were stripped of their provisions and their horses, and beaten if they were slow to hand them over. The road that sustained the townspeople in peacetime brought ruin upon them in times of war.
