Chargorod, in eastern Podolia, was one of those small towns where Jews formed the great majority of the inhabitants and lived by crafts and petty trade. When the insurgent bands descended upon it, they began by demanding a levy from the community, then looted house by house when the sum seemed insufficient. The synagogue was desecrated, the Torah scrolls thrown to the ground. Inhabitants who attempted to resist were beaten; several lost their lives.
