Iampil, a ford town on the Dniester downstream from Mohyliv, lived off the crossing trade and the commerce between the two banks, and its population was largely Jewish. During the civil war, the armed bands that held the banks in turn seized the goods stored there. Houses were broken into, shops emptied, inhabitants beaten to force them to give up what they had hidden. The town was undefended and could offer no resistance to the detachments that passed through.
