Toll

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

the town pillaged as the columns passed, its inhabitants stripped and beaten

Derajnia, a small town in Podolia on the railway line leading to Proskourov, watched armed columns pass through as they fought over the province. Each passage resulted in the pillaging of Jewish homes and a ransom demanded from the community. The inhabitants were stripped of their clothing and provisions, beaten when they protested. The town, growing poorer month by month, never recovered from this succession of exactions.
