the old Jewish town plundered and partially burned
Sataniv, on the Zbroutch which marked the old Austrian border, was home to one of the oldest Jewish communities in Podolia, known for its fortified synagogue and ancient cemetery. The civil war brought marauding bands that scoured the border region. The town was pillaged, part of its houses burned, its Jewish inhabitants driven out or beaten. The place, which had survived the Cossack wars and the partitions, then lost a portion of what the centuries had left there.
