From the eighteenth to the twenty-second of October, Odessa experienced the deadliest pogrom of the wave that followed the October Manifesto. The Jewish quarters were ransacked for four days, with the open complicity of the police, who disarmed the self-defense groups and allowed the gangs to act freely.
The Manifesto, by which the Tsar granted a constitution, had been celebrated in the streets. The reaction came immediately: the "Black Hundreds" attributed the concession to Jews and revolutionaries, and struck the former in order to reach the latter. Odessa, where Jewish self-defense was the best organized in the Empire, demonstrates that even an armed community cannot hold out against a crowd backed by the police.
