Jewish shops and homes plundered for three days
From the third to the fifth of May, Jewish shops and homes were pillaged in Odessa.
Odessa was the most Jewish city of the Empire in its intellectual life: Hebrew press, modern schools, circles of the Haskalah. It was from there that the first formulations of political Zionism and Jewish self-defense would emerge — the city had already experienced several pogroms over the course of the century, and it was this repetition that gave rise there to the idea that one must organize oneself rather than await the protection of the state.
