the Jewish quarter sacked again
The Jewish quarter of Kichinev was sacked again, two years after the 1903 pogrom that had shaken world opinion.
The first pogrom had prompted international protest and Bialik's poem about the city of slaughter, which rebuked the victims for their passivity as much as the murderers for their crime. It was from this that the idea of self-defence was born. The second pogrom, less deadly, shows that protest had prevented nothing — and it hastened the emigration of those who had stayed.
