Jewish quarter plundered and houses destroyed
Ismail, on the lower Danube, experiences a pogrom in 1872 that ravages its Jewish quarter. Houses are looted and destroyed, shops emptied, and the population forced to flee to neighboring localities in Bessarabia, a province then attached to the Russian Empire after a long back-and-forth between sovereignties.
The riot is part of a series of disturbances affecting Danubian towns as commercial and national rivalries sharpen within them. It foreshadows, in a region where communities were numerous and long-established, the wave of pogroms that would strike the Russian Empire in the following decade.
