Jews rounded up in the north of the province are penned in the ruins of the hamlet, without shelter or provisions, awaiting convoys to the east; reports from the time describe daily deaths from exhaustion and summary executions at the camp's edges.
Edineț serves as a second major transit camp for the deportations from Bessarabia. Columns that have arrived on foot from the northern towns remain there for weeks in ruined buildings, under the watch of the gendarmerie. The records of the period document daily deaths from exhaustion and dysentery, and stragglers from the convoys setting out again toward the Dniestr are shot along the way. Few of those who passed through this camp will survive the winter.
