the city taken by the haidamaques, the Jewish quarter destroyed

Korsoun, in the valley of the Ros, was taken as were the neighboring towns, and its Jewish quarter destroyed. The uprising made no distinctions: wherever the insurgents entered, the Polish nobleman, the Uniate priest, and the Jew were put to death together, and often on the same day, in the same square. This feature — the simultaneity of the three massacres — recurs in all the accounts, whether they come from Basilian monasteries, communal registers, or reports sent to Varsovie. It tells us what the uprising was aimed at: not a single religion, but a social order of which the Jews were the most exposed stratum because they were the closest to the peasants.
