the town taken by the haidamakas, the Jewish quarter destroyed
Kaniv, on the Dnieper, had already endured the Haidamak incursions of previous decades, which had been raids; this time it was destruction. Once the city was taken, the Jewish quarter was annihilated. The difference between the earlier raids and the Koliivshchyna lies in their scale and duration: the bands, previously numbering a few dozen men, now counted in the thousands, held the countryside for several months, and captured fortified towns. The Jews who escaped the massacres on the right bank fled toward Volhynia, toward Podolia, or beyond the Dniester, and many never returned.
