The community of Zhytomyr was massacred during the capture of the city.

Volhynia and Podolia, which bore the greatest part of Ukrainian Jewry, were swept by Cossack bands over two summers; the communities that survived almost always owed their survival to flight westward, toward Poland proper, Lithuania, Moravia, and the Empire.
