Zhytomyr (Zhitomir), a city in central Ukraine, harbored a large Jewish community since the 17th century. In the 19th century, it hosted an important yeshiva and was a center of debates between Hasidism and Haskalah. Jews represented a third of the population at the beginning of the 20th century. The majority of the community was killed by the Einsatzgruppen in 1941.
