the community destroyed

The community of Quedlinburg, a city of the imperial ladies' abbey, was destroyed during the Black Death.

The abbess held the Jews in exchange for dues; this revenue disappeared along with them, and the city remained for a long time without a Jewish presence.

The community had lived at the foot of the castle hill, in a narrow lane whose name long preserved the Memory; Jewish life did not return there until the modern era, and then only by toleration.
