the community destroyed, sixty years after the affair of Werner of Oberwesel

The community of Bacharach was destroyed during the Black Death, sixty years after the affair of Werner von Oberwesel, whose body found in the neighboring town had already triggered killings throughout the region.

The cult of this alleged martyr persisted in the valley until the twentieth century, keeping alive the accusation of ritual murder in the very place where it had killed.
