the destroyed community

The community of Meissen was destroyed during the Black Death.

The seat of the margraves who gave their name to the land, the city appears in the lists of Saxon communities annihilated that year.

The community lived at the foot of the cathedral and the castle, and lent to the merchants of the Elbe. After the wave, the margraviate readmitted Jews only on a precarious basis, and Saxon Judaism virtually disappeared from the region for several centuries.
