The community of Oberwesel was destroyed during the Black Death.

It was from this town that, two generations earlier, the affair of the body of Werner had originated — found in a cellar and immediately alleged to be the victim of a ritual murder; the Jews of Oberwesel had already paid for that accusation before paying for that of the wells.
