The community of Luneburg was destroyed during the Black Death.

The city lived by salt, which made the fortune of the Hanse; it appears in the lists of Lower Saxony communities annihilated that year.

The community lent to salt merchants and to the boatmen of the Ilmenau. Its houses were taken over by the burghers after the massacre, and the city remained closed to Jews for centuries.
