the community destroyed
The community of Halle, on the Saale, was destroyed during the Black Death.
The town lived by salt, and Jewish moneylenders financed the saltworks there; their houses were reclaimed by the burghers after the massacre.
The town belonged to the Archbishop of Magdeburg, who drew a levy from the Jews; it readmitted them in the following century, then expelled them again, following a back-and-forth movement common in episcopal towns.
