The community of Friedberg, in Wetterau, was destroyed during the Black Death.

It subsequently reconstituted itself and became, in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, one of the most important in Hesse, with a fortified Jewish quarter and a ritual bath dug very deep, which still survives.
