The community of Brandenburg an der Havel, which gave its name to the march, was destroyed during the Black Death.

An episcopal see and one of the oldest cities in the region, it appears in the lists of communities annihilated between the Elbe and the Oder; its Jewish life was only reconstituted in the following century, and briefly.
