the community destroyed

The community of Duisburg was destroyed during the Black Death.

A city of the lower Ruhr and a port on the Rhine, Duisburg appears in the lists of communities annihilated that year throughout the Rhine basin.

The Hanseatic trade had attracted Jewish moneylenders there as early as the preceding century. After the destruction, the city readmitted them only under precarious charters, and Judaism there long remained without a synagogue.
