the community destroyed

The community of Brunswick was destroyed during the Black Death.

A Hanseatic city and residence of the dukes of Brunswick, it appears in the lists of Lower Saxony communities annihilated that year.

The community lived near the cloth market and lent to Hanseatic merchants. Its houses were taken over by the burghers, and more than a century passed before the city readmitted Jews.
