The community of Bremen was destroyed during the Black Death.

The Hanseatic city thereafter admitted no Jews as permanent residents for centuries; it was the French Revolution and the Napoleonic occupation that brought Jewish life back to it.

The community, small in number, lived by lending to the port's merchants; its assets were seized by the council, following the pattern of division that took place in all the cities of the Hanse.
