Black Death massacres in Swabia
1349·Kaufbeuren
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
the community destroyed
The community of Kaufbeuren was destroyed during the Black Death.
The Swabian imperial city appears in the lists of communities annihilated between the Lech and the Iller; it admitted no Jews as permanent residents for centuries.
Swabian Judaism then retreated into the villages of the secular and ecclesiastical lordships, where letters of residence were sold; it was there that it reconstituted itself, and not in the free cities.
