In Augsburg, a merchant city of Swabia, the community was destroyed during the wave of the Black Death.

The Jews were recalled after a few years, as the city needed credit, then expelled definitively in the following century, when the great Christian banking houses — the Fugger, the Welser — had taken their place. The decline of German Judaism at the end of the Middle Ages owes as much to this economic substitution as to the massacres.
