The community of Rostock was destroyed during the Black Death.

The largest city of Mecklenburg appears in the lists of Baltic communities annihilated; Judaism did not reappear there until after the Middle Ages.

The community lived from lending to the port's merchants and shipowners. Its property was seized by the council, and the Hanseatic city remained thereafter closed to Jews for several centuries.
