the community massacred

Ochsenfurt, already destroyed in the time of Rintfleisch, saw its community massacred a second time by the Armleder bands. The town is among those that appear in both lists of the Nuremberg Memorbuch.

Between the two waves, the community had reconstituted itself: a few families recalled by the city, resettled under charter, practicing the same trades in the same streets. It is this cycle — destruction, recall, destruction — that characterizes German Judaism of the fourteenth century, and that explains why no community there ever acquired the depth of those of Spain or Italy.
