Lydda (ancient Lod), a city of the Shephelah, was one of the principal rabbinic centers of the Mishnaic and Talmudic period. After the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem (70 CE), the Sanhedrin convened there temporarily under the leadership of Rabbi Eliezer ben Hyrcanus and other sages. The city is frequently mentioned in rabbinic literature.
