Amora palestinien du IVe siècle, associé aux plus éminents maîtres de sa génération, R. Yona et R. Yossé II, il était natif de Lod mais s'établit à Tibériade, où il constitua un tribunal avec Houna II et Juda bar Pazi. Bien qu'autorité reconnue en halakha, c'est en aggada qu'il excella, étant le plus cité des maîtres de son temps ; commentant la ligature d'Isaac, il illustre par une parabole royale l'idée que Dieu, en demandant à Abraham d'offrir son fils, ne lui demandait pas de le tuer mais de le présenter vivant sur l'autel.
