Personnage cité dans la Mishna (Ta'anit iv. 6) au sujet de l'incendie de la Torah, l'une des cinq catastrophes rattachées au 17 tamouz — mention si vague que son identité reste discutée. On l'associe parfois au soldat romain qui, vers l'an 50 selon Josèphe, brûla publiquement un rouleau de la Torah en le raillant, ce qui faillit provoquer une révolte avant que le procurateur Cumanus n'apaise la foule en décapitant le coupable ; d'autres y voient plutôt le bourreau qui, lors des persécutions d'Hadrien, enveloppa Ḥanina ben Teradyon dans un rouleau de la Torah avant de le brûler vif.
