L'un des plus éminents tannaïm des Ier et IIe siècles, disciple de Rabbi Yohanan ben Zakkaï et beau-frère de Gamaliel II, dont il épousa la sœur. Selon la légende, c'est tardivement, contre la volonté de son père, qu'il quitta les travaux des champs pour Jérusalem afin d'étudier la Torah, endurant de grandes privations jusqu'à ce qu'un discours improvisé devant son père venu le déshériter révèle son savoir et provoque leur réconciliation. Il aida ensuite Yohanan à s'échapper de Jérusalem assiégée, puis siégea au Sanhédrin de Yavné sous la présidence de Gamaliel II tout en dirigeant sa propre académie à Lydda, où sa réputation de grand exégète s'imposa.
