Les juifs d'Afrique du Nord

Les juifs de l'Afrique du Nord : démographie et onomastique est un ouvrage publié à Alger en 1936 par Maurice Eisenbeth (1886-1957), alors Grand Rabbin d'Alger. Il s'agit de la première étude systématique des populations juives d'Afrique du Nord — Maroc, Algérie, Tunisie et Libye — fondée à la fois sur les recensements coloniaux, les registres communautaires et un dépouillement méthodique des patronymes. L'ouvrage se divise en deux grandes parties. La première partie, démographique, établit les effectifs, la répartition géographique et la structure par communautés des juifs nord-africains au tournant des années 1930, à partir des données statistiques françaises, espagnoles et italiennes disponibles à l'époque, croisées avec les archives rabbiniques locales. Eisenbeth y décrit, commune par commune, les grandes communautés (Alger, Constantine, Oran, Tunis, Fès, Casablanca, Tripoli…) mais aussi des dizaines de communautés plus modestes des oasis, de l'Atlas et du Sud tunisien. La seconde partie, onomastique, constitue le cœur durable de l'ouvrage et explique sa postérité. Eisenbeth y dresse un catalogue raisonné de plusieurs centaines de patronymes portés par les juifs d'Afrique du Nord, en indiquant pour chacun : son étymologie probable (hébraïque, araméenne, arabe, berbère, judéo-espagnole, italienne ou toponymique), ses variantes orthographiques, son aire de diffusion géographique et les lignées rabbiniques ou marchandes notables qui l'ont porté. Il s'appuie sur une documentation de première main — registres de ketoubot, actes de tribunal rabbinique, listes d'offrandes synagogales, épitaphes de cimetières — et entreprend le premier classement typologique des noms de famille judéo-maghrébins : noms bibliques, noms sacerdotaux (Cohen, Levi), toponymes ibériques hérités de l'expulsion de 1492 (Toledano, Narboni, Corcos), toponymes maghrébins (Tetouani, Mrejen, Fezzani), arabismes descriptifs (Abitbol, Dahan, Chriqui), surnoms professionnels (Sayag, Neggar), et patronymes spécifiquement rabbiniques. Par sa méthode comme par son ampleur, cet ouvrage demeure, près d'un siècle plus tard, une référence incontournable de la généalogie juive nord-africaine et de la recherche sur les identités juives maghrébines. Il a nourri toutes les études ultérieures — Paul Sebag, Robert Attal, Joseph Tolédano, Michaël Laskier — et constitue pour des dizaines de milliers de familles issues d'Afrique du Nord la porte d'entrée vers l'histoire de leur nom.
