Born in Venice in a Jewish family (daughter of Amedeo Grassini and Emma Levi); she married Cesare Sarfatti, Jewish lawyer from Padua, whose name she took. Art critic (Avanti!, then animator of the Novecento Italiano movement), she was the biographer and mistress of Mussolini. She published about twenty books. Although converted to Catholicism, she fled Italy in 1938 after the racial laws.
